Jerry has been a partner with the firm since 1989. Prior to joining the firm, Jerry was selected for a Judicial Clerkship in 1984 to work for the Judges of the Circuit Court of Prince William County. The Prince William County Bar Association has previously elected Jerry to serve as one of its members on the Judicial Selection Committee. He has also been selected to lecture on behalf of the Virginia State Bar on issues related to ethics and professionalism. Jerry received his Bachelor’s Degree from George Mason University in 1981 and his Juris Doctor from George Mason School of Law in 1984. He has been a member of the Virginia State Bar Association since 1984 and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the International Business Committee and the Virginia State Bar International Practice Section. He is admitted to practice in the U. S. District Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. Immigration and the health care debateYou’ve likely read by now that immigration issues have become part of the national dialogue in the health care reform debate. The primary issue concerns who will benefit if a national plan is put in place. It’s not difficult to conclude that many health care reform advocates hoped that President Obama would deal with immigration first, and then tackle the equally explosive issue of national health care The immigration solution: Get politicians to commitAs the Obama administration begins to tackle the issues associated with immigration reform, it is undoubtedly searching for the keys to fixing our broken and neglected immigration system. The issues that we face are not all new and previous administrations have recognized the seriousness of finding and implementing a proper strategy. ICE steps up auditsIt seems that the government has realized that tougher enforcement on the business could be a key first step in significantly reducing the illegal portion of the U.S. workforce. Perhaps the tougher sanctions will be the answer in getting business to comply with U.S. hiring requirements. Immigration reform bill coming upThe last time the issue of immigration reform was considered was in 2007. That measure failed in the Senate. The result is that the issues that were raised in 2007 are still waiting for us to consider and resolve. The issues involved in immigration reform that need to be addressed are numerous and complex. Once Congress takes up some of the narrow immigration issues that must be dealt with this year (i.e. E-Verify), it’s hopeful that the other larger immigration reform issues will be dealt with as well. Virtual Border fence: Are the holes fixed?Have you heard about the “virtual fence?” If not, you’re not alone; but you will surely read much more about it as immigration reform begins rolling forward. Can Reform Boost the U.S. Economy?The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) have estimated the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006, as proposed in April 2006, would have had the effect of generating $66 billion in revenue between 2007-2016, primarily from payroll and income taxes. A Cure for the Nursing ShortageAlthough some nurse job seekers are finding that a tough economy means less job options, this appears to be temporary.
