American DesiI have been fortunate enough to travel to India to visit my parents' hometown. As a child growing up in a community where my family was the only Indian family, I was not proud of being Indian, "Dirty Desi" was my nickname for most of elementary school. The rest of the students would make fun of the food my mom packed for lunch, usually traditional Indian curries that my mom would make from curry powders that were sent to us by our relatives in India. A Taste of Chinese CultureThis evening I decided to go try a new Chinese restaurant. My problem with Chinese restaurants in America is that the food is always bland and that it does not taste like the food Chinese people eat. I do not know if it is because they use different ingredients or because they cater to an American palate, but I know that I often find that I never finish eating my food when we go to Chinese restaurants. Greek Dancing and CultureEveryone tells me that Greek dancing is so easy, but I have never found it easy. When I was in twelve years old, my parents sent me to learn Greek dances at the local Greek community center. They told me that it was very important to preserve Greek traditions in the family and that my not speaking Greek was already an embarrassment to the rest of my family. Trip to the Hispanic Heritage FestivalToday I went to the Hispanic Heritage festival in my town. The local Hispanic community had worked very hard for months to put this festival together and part of all the proceeds from raffle tickets and vendor fees would be donated to the cancer society. Hispanic and Latin HeritageWhen I was a kid growing up in a Hispanic household, my parents would always tell me stories about their town in Mexico. Their town they said had many stories about wizards and witches passed down from generation to generation. There were cautionary tales about how witches hid in the cornfields since the first Latin settlers arrived and scared children who played hide and go seek in the fields. Modern Warfare In The NewsThe is a general lack of coverage of wars today. Some may claim it is because the same people who profit from the wars (construction companies, other contractors), control or influence the companies that own the media. Whether this is true, or not I do not know, though it is certainly possible.
What is obvious is certain news organizations have biases towards certain political parties. For example Fox news is was more biased towards the Republican candidate in the 2008 election.
