Are student loan payments tax deductible?

A:I enjoy reading nearly everything Kim Lankford writes for Kiplingers.com because she gets straight to the point and offers up real information that people can actually use. Yesterday's "Ask Kim" featured some good info for people who are wondering whether they can deduct student loan payments and/or interest come tax time. To start: student loan payments are not tax deductible, but interest is. There's a catch though if you want to take the full deduction--you must earn $55,000 or less if you are single and $110,000 or less if you are married and filing jointly. There is also a limit
