In 2010, more than 100,000 charges were brought against employers who were charged with discrimination. Today, discrimination is not just racial. Employees are reportedly being discriminated against for their gender, disabilities, religion and even in retaliation for a multitude of different reasons. Sometimes, the discrimination can be so subtle, that it goes unnoticed and unreported.
By its very definition, workplace harassment is an act or instance of disturbing, pestering or troubling repeatedly. These events are unwelcome in nature and can cause a significant amount of anxiety, especially if the harassment is taking place at work.
One of the most difficult situations an employee will encounter is an angry customer. The human emotional response can and often tries to kick in resulting in an escalation of the customer's ire coupled with the employee becoming enraged as well. This is a no win scenario for both parties involved with devastating repercussions including loss of a customer, potential new business and possible quitting or termination of the employee.
Lately, it seems that the issue of bullying in schools has taken a stronghold over the media. Despite the media attention it is receiving though, this epidemic seems to be spreading at an alarming rate. Most recently, a YouTube video went viral when a victim of bullying took matters into his own hands. After being beaten down incessantly by his abuser, the young man finally has enough and lets his attacker have it.
It is so important for workplaces today to have a diverse workforce. The benefits of workplace diversity include increased productivity, innovation and better problem solving abilities. Some companies even find that having a more diverse staff base helps them stay competitive, especially if they compete in an international market.
You have probably heard the word "ethics" thrown around quite a bit, but do you know what ethics are? Ethics are a person or corporations moral philosophy, which involves how a person or business defines and handles right and wrong behavior. A solid ethical foundation is generally based upon human rights, what is fair and what is in the best interest of the workplace (both employer and employee).
Workplace Ethics is a subject that we have all heard of. In fact, the subject of Ethics in general is something that most people are familiar with. And, what is commonly understood about ethics is there are ethics and then there are workplace ethics. What most people do not realize, however, is that there is no such thing as workplace ethics; ethics are the same, (or, should be) whether in the workplace or in personal life.
Social media has forever changed the rules in the job marketplace. The amazing amount of information that is so quickly accessible provides a tempting opportunity to be a fly on the wall of an applicant's personal life. Recruiters need to exercise caution and tread carefully. There are a plethora of social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn that provide instant and often personal information about a candidate.
