![]() Good Starter Fish for the Saltwater AquariumOnce all the research, planning and waiting is complete and the aquarium is full of water and has finally finished cycling you will finally be ready to introduce your first fish.
It is important to ensure that you make the right choice though as there are some fish which are suitable to be added at this stage and there are fish which are not.
Do you know what you are looking for in the selection of your first fish? ![]() Is There Such a Thing as a Maintenance Free AquariumA maintenance free aquarium - no work at all! Just view and enjoy the coral colours and the various reef fish. Many or perhaps all aquarists would tend to call that aquatic heaven - maybe.
Is it possible though? Is there a way that the aquarist can design a marine system where, once all is settled and mature, there is nothing else to do? ![]() Why is Aquarium Filtration Such a Hot TopicThe marine aquarium hobby was once viewed as very hard, very expensive, and needing a touch of magic. The first two were correct, but not the latter, that simply being how it probably appeared to anyone not in the hobby but perhaps with a spattering of knowledge. There was little knowledge of the needs of captive marine life, and for the most part (the biggest most part) only very hardy life in very small numbers survived for any length of time, and that was usually measured in months. ![]() The Canister Filter - Any Use in a Saltwater AquariumThe canister filter has been in use for decades. Freshwater aquarists were the first to make use of them and they still do. Then along came the marine aquarium and the canister filter was employed to support those to. Canister filters have been around for so long that they are now very dependable and failures are rare. ![]() 5 Cardinal Sins of a Marine AquaristI thought I’d jot down what I consider to be the five major sins of a marine aquarist, be that for a reef tank or a fish only tank. They are not in any particular order. The list is not just aimed at beginners to the hobby who are just starting a saltwater aquarium but at aquarists of any level. ![]() Which to Choose - a Small or Large AquariumMost aquarists are dictated to by circumstance. There is a really big aquarium, at a really good price, but one rather definite problem, and that is there’s nowhere to put it. So a smaller aquarium is chosen, but not by choice. However, even in the described circumstances, a smaller aquarium could be the one of choice. ![]() Starting a Marine Aquarium - the Very First ConsiderationsSeeing pictures of a healthy marine fish only or reef aquarium in books or on the internet, or even better, in reality at a public aquarium will cause just about anyone to appreciate the beauty and general fascination of them. Some people will wonder if they could have one, and the thought will shortly disappear. Others, however, will not forget so easily and will want to delve further into the possibility of having their own home aquarium. ![]() How to Acclimitise New Corals and Fish CorrectlyIt always amazes me how many people I see or talk to who purchase a marine animal, take it home, open the bag and pour it into their aquarium. I can never understand why some people do not acclimitise their purchases properly, it could be laziness, lack of knowledge, impatience etc but one thing is for certain life is on the line here so it must be done correctly. ![]() The Nitrogen Cycle - It's Important you KnowWe've all seen salt water aquariums in books and on the internet as well as in our homes. They come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, some being enormous, then all the way down in size to a nano aquarium. Whatever size they are and whether they are fish only or reef, they rely on nature's life support system, the nitrogen cycle. ![]() How to Mix SaltwaterNew seawater is going to be mixed many times in the future. Why not take a little extra trouble in the initial mix and save a lot of time later?
When purchasing the sea salt, obtain salt that is specifically designed for use with R/O water, as this should be used rather than tap water.
