![]() Richard Walker - ArticlesI became an entrepreneur when I started my first business at age twelve. My dream was simple: become a great leader and change the world. Today, as the President and CEO of Efficient Technology Inc, my vision is constantly being exercised and my goal is still the same. These articles are about the many facets of my passion for business: leadership, management, people, processes and technology. While I enjoy other passions like snowboarding and surfing, my focus is to share what I learn daily with everyone around me, and readers like you. I welcome your feedback and insight!
How To Tell If That Solution You’re Buying Is Enterprise-LevelAll too often it appears that when a software company wants to make it easier to sell their solution to everyone in an organization they succumb to the lure of labeling their software product as “enterprise level” in a veiled attempt to attract larger organizations that will distribute the product to all of their users at once. How To Tell If An Email Link Is Safe To ClickHave you ever received an email that appeared to be from a service you trusted (e.g. a bank, hosting company, service you subscribe to, etc)? Of course you have. We get them all the time. But every now and them some scam artist attempts to fool you by sending you an email that is cleverly disguised to look like an email you can trust (this is called phishing). You Just Lost Your Word Document… Now Don’t Lose Your HeadYou spent the last several hours working on a Word document. It was perfect. You saved it. Everything’s great right? Right. But now you start making changes with the intention of cloning the document to create a new one (e.g. you’re writing letters or press releases or memos, etc). And then, after you get all the modifications done you hit save. Give Your Mouse The Right FingerThis is no secret: I DESPISE the mouse. It’s not because they’re difficult to use or don’t follow directions. I don’t like the mouse because it is SLOW! Compared to hitting two keys on your keyboard, the mouse takes forever to drag across the screen, place on top of a button, click, move to the next button and click. My Efficient Blackberry StormI don't believe in New Years Resolutions because why wait until a new year to make a valuable change? So in early December I went ahead and changed my cell phone from the Palm Treo to the new Blackberry Storm. WOW! What a difference. Positive Reinforcement Goes a Long WayWhen I was an employee for someone else I saw too many managers only provide negative feedback when their employees made mistakes and positive encouragement for only their exceptional achievements. Why Servant Leadership Is Ideal For The Millenial GenerationOver the past few weeks I've been learning a lot more about the Millennial Generation (Gen-Y). This is the generation after Generation X, and they seem to be quite the opposite. Where the Gen X group is highly independent, even off-standish, the millennial group is all about social interaction and keeping their options open. The Great Ideas Other People Give YouOne of my favorite ways to find new ideas is to read about methods and concepts that work in other companies and industries. Why try to reinvent the wheel? Instead just follow what someone else does and use it to your benefit. How to Know Your AudienceYou've heard the phrase "know your audience" but do you know how to do that? Of course it means to know who is in your audience, what their general preferences are, to know different ways to relate to them, etc. Dragon – Speak and TypeI may have found the best tool since the invention of the keyboard. It's called Dragon Naturally Speaking. This is a piece of software that comes with a headset so I can speak what I want to write.
