![]() Terry Hunefeld - ArticlesTerry Hunefeld, CRB, CRS, began his real estate career in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1974. In 1976 and 1977, Terry sold more homes than any other real estate agent in Grand Rapids, earning the Top Ten Award from the Grand Rapids Association of REALTORS®.
In his youth Terry was a fairly conservative member of the Republican Party. He describes a life-changing period in the 1980's: "I discovered the eco-novelist Edward Abbey in 1986 (Desert Solitaire, Down The River, The Monkeywrench Gang) followed in rapid succession by Ram Dass, Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, Wayne Dyer and over the next few years underwent a spiritual/environmental journey and transformation (complete with solitary mediations at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and Vision Quests in the Inyo Mountains!) and woke up one morning a liberal environmentalist, much to the surprise of my loving spouse, Ann P. Dunham, and my business associates." In 1995, Terry helped 176 residential clients with their real estate transactions. In 1997 the Circuit Court of Illinois recognized Terry as an expert witness in matters of real estate marketing. He was a featured speaker at many real estate marketing classes for real estate professionals throughout Michigan, as well as a guest instructor regarding real estate marketing at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids Community College and The Grand Rapids Department of Public Education. Throughout his career, Terry studied effective marketing practices in other industries and experimented with applying those strategies in his real estate business. In 1987 Terry discovered that the right words, and the right tone of voice, on a recorded message, could transform the way consumers saw him, into a valuable, knowledgeable consultant instead of a salesperson. Over the next few years he developed a sophisticated system of using recorded messages to create a steady stream of more clients than he could handle. During his 25 year career in real estate (1974-1998) Terry was a licensed builder, real estate broker, and served as president of U.S. Home and Realty Corporation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned both the Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) and Certified Real Estate Broker (CRB) designations from the National Association of Realtors. In 1995, Terry’s wife, Ann Dunham, encouraged him to share his marketing systems with the real estate profession, so Terry developed and wrote The Gold Rush System and The Principles Of The Automatic Prospecting System series of books, videos and audios for real estate and lending professionals. In addition to Gold Rush and The Principles Of The Automatic Prospecting System, Terry authored specialized marketing manuals for real estate and lending professionals showing them how to market their services and increase their personal productivity: Magic Words – Hotline Transcripts You Can Use To Increase Sales and Preferred Buyers – How Serving Buyers Can Make You Rich In Real Estate. In addition to his books and systems, Terry wrote numerous articles for real estate trade magazines helping educate agents and brokers about the Law Of Attractiveness and Automated Marketing. Terry’s real estate marketing articles were published in the national publications of Today’s REALTOR®, The Real Estate Professional and The Rockwell Report as well as numerous state trade journals such as: Colorado REALTOR® Magazine, The Washington REALTOR®, Alabama REALTOR®, The Rhode Island REALTOR® News, The Pennsylvania REALTOR®, Sacramento REALTOR® News, Tar Heel REALTOR® (North Carolina), and Texas REALTOR®. In 1997 Terry conducted a series of four Automatic Prospecting System two-day workshops entitled The $100,000 Weekend attended by 400 real estate, lending and insurance professionals from the U.S. and Canada at a tuition of $1,000 each. Throughout his Grand Rapids real estate career, Terry was interviewed about real estate matters on television and radio by Henry Erb, Jim Reikse, Andy Rent, Tony Gates and Bob Segall. He has been interviewed and featured in The Grand Rapids Press articles written by business editor Jim Harger and Joan Huyser-Honig. Chicago Tribune reporter Brian Edwards wrote about Terry Hunefeld: “During my two years as a residential real estate reporter for the Chicago Tribune, I talked with hundreds of real estate brokers. I can’t recall ever dealing with a broker who possessed the package of skills, knowledge, contacts and attitude that Terry brings to the business.” In 1998, Terry merged his Gold Rush System with By Referral Only, Inc, and spent the next nine years teaching marketing to By Referral Only members while serving first as Vice-president of Marketing, then as Chief Operating Officer, then President, and finally as President/CEO until his retirement in 2007. Terry moved to San Diego, California in 1998 and lives 30 miles north of San Diego in the community of Encinitas with his wife Ann. They have 2 daughters, MaryCatherine (graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, now working for a real estate firm in Chicago) and Ann Patrice (a college student at Regis University in Denver). Terry Hunefeld began birding after moving his family to California in 1998. Over the next 8 years his 3 best friends all died while still in their 50’s. Feeling as if he were buried alive behind drywall, Hunefeld retired and sold his interest in By Referral Only in April, 2007 to follow his bliss – being outdoors, watching the sun rise, breathing the ocean mist, studying birds. Now Terry lives his motto every day: “Life is short. Bird often.” by being out in nature, looking at birds and studying their habits. Ask him why and he will tell you, "It's magic." Terry is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Buena Vista Audubon Society and the Bird Festival committee of the San Diego Audubon Society. He is the coordinator/compiler for the annual Oceanside Audubon Christmas Bird Count and is the administrator for Buena Vista Audubon's "SoCal Pelagic Birding" website http://www.SoCalBirding.com, a site specializing in chartering boats into the Pacific Ocean to observe and photograph seabirds. When not on a boat, Terry’s favorite San Diego birding spots are Point Loma, San Elijo Lagoon and seabirding by telescope from Stan’s Bench at LaJolla Cove. In 2007, Terry Hunefeld retired from his job as a CEO to follow his bliss of pelagic birding - observing seabirds at sea. He and Ann now own and operate the Inn at Moonlight Beach Bed and Breakfast near the sea in the San Diego area.
