Bacon, Freud, Mehta, Souza — Human figure in the shadow II War and India’s partitionWhile India struggled against the long yoke of British imperialism, the II World War intervened in Europe to enact a human catastrophe unknown and unimagined in the history.A new human situation was to emerge from the creative imagination of artists. It is in this socio-historical context of the II War and the time thereafter that I locate the works of the four artists—Francis Bacon,Lucien Freud, Souza and Tyeb Mehta. Are Prices the judge of value of art? What’s galling is that market makes us believe higher the price higher is the value of art work. The market players work to create higher prices so that high price sits like a god in a temple and hence can not be questioned as arbiter of aesthetic value. Prices are sacrosanct and the value of art work can not be questioned if some oligopoly of rich –very rich players happen to be the collectors of the works Art, artists, collectors and the gold rushA clever art collector apart from targeting big profit also climbs up the socio-cultural tower and is viewed as the prince charming by ordinary mortals on ground. The success with money is as daunting as failure with it. But a true collector collects for love and love alone shall prevail. To be rich is not a curse, the curse is if it makes us fall. FRAGRANCE OF AUTUMNAn exhibtion of paintings by Baljit Chadha, Manoj Manttra on the Fragrance of Autumn held in New Delhi.
Is not the autumn the surfeit of rejuvenation. Do we not talk of the birth death rebirth cycle? Is the Resurrection of Jesus not an emblem of continuity of life and hope? Buddha—the PerennialBuddhism evolved and appropriated the local cultural elements in all these lands. Chinese, Tibetans Japanese, Thais, Sri Lankan etc. evolved their own version of Buddhism. Even within India it acquired different strains of Buddhism. Thus from early times Buddhism subsumed local cultural flavour. All these factors affected the art and religious rendering of Buddha. Abani Sen—the forgotten MaestroAbani sen the artist who lived in delhi and was a teacher to likes of Manjit Bawa and Jagdish Dey had been forgotten in the days of fast lane networking. His art is revived in memories of the art lovers by gallery Art Indus I painted an Eden of Flowers DivineBaljit Chadha has created a fresh stylistic edifice and his creative expression jumps from the visible-familiar to spiritually felt flowers in a divine Eden.
Excellent paintings. Search of One God—Shirdi Sai BabaPrince Chand mounts oils on canvas at Studio Vasant to bring to us the magic of Shirdi Sai for whom God is One despite different paths we take. Back to Basics--A Search for Primitve in ArtManoj Mantra the young acolyte of art from Lucknow college of art has charted his course of art journey.Manoj Mantra has freed himself from the demons that haunt present day art. He works on paper drawings.
Mantra’s drawings lead in the land of dualities—of raw primitiveness and modern factotum. His human figure is more a totemic image with uneven reed like teeth and demeanour. The Eternal CircleBaljit Chadha is an artist with deep roots in Asian cultural traditions which includes India and especially Japan. Long years spent in Japan drew his creative interest to Japanese style painting. With great felicity he paints Nature and flowers. That is but only one aspect of his creative forays.
Here I am concerned with his spiritual focus on the circle as a means of artistic expression. To paint with spiritual symbolism requires an inner search, equanimity, and a feel for the timeless.
