A Brief Guide To Repairing Chrome

Chrome is a special kind of paint applied on wheel mags and car panels that is prone to chips and other unsightly marks which can be pretty annoying. Firstly, clean out the item or area to be repaired with soap and water thoroughly. Take 320 grit sandpaper and sand off the scratch. If it happens to be a bit too deep say a hole or rust, you are advised to use 60 or 120 grit sandpaper to sand it well.

Ensure to use the 320 grit sandpaper if the scratch at hand is not that serious. Glazing compound or liquid steel is used for those cases that tend to be a little deep so that it fill up and levels up with the rest of the surface. After it dries up, have it sanded with the 320 grit sandpaper to level it evenly. Clean off the area with some clean cloth to wipe off any dust. Take a lacquer thinner or wax remover to thoroughly clean off the area free of dust again. Take a spray of high build primer to lightly spray some two coats of the same on the area. The first spray should be left to dry before the other one is applied. The high build self etching primer dries up fast. Use some regular primer to add another 2 or 3 coats on this. They should also be applied one coat over the other so that they dry up well.

It is important to be aware that drips and bubbles tend to form on the surface if you spray too near. Sand and apply the primer once again to any part that is imperfect pr one that you feel is not up to standard. Ensure that the repaired area is very smooth. Do not hesitate to sand it several other times if it not as smooth as you'd like it to be. This is all done with the aim of eliminating flaws which tend to be all too obvious once you are through with painting the surface. Go back to the wax remover or lacquer thinner so that any dust and grease are quickly taken care of. Once you are done with this, use the chrome spray to apply 2 or 3 thin coats of chrome. Avoid dark spot formation by having the sprayer approximately 8-10 inches away.

Please ensure that as you apply the chrome, it blends in well with the surface. In case of any imperfections, you'll have to wait for the paint to completely dry up and then sand the area again with a 1500 grit sandpaper before cleaning the area once again and repainting it.
