Boston Nissan Explains the Difference Between Front and Rear Wheel Drive

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 |

We know buying a car from our Boston Nissan dealership is not without a lot of decisions. Not only do you have to decide the type of car, but you'll also need to consider which drive type is right for you. Do you need a front or rear wheel drive?

Coastal Nissan explains the difference between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive to help you make a more informed decision when choosing a new or used Nissan:

Cars With Rear Wheel Drive

Most all cars were made with rear wheel drive before the 1970's. In recent years, rear wheel drive has become more common again, because the cars themselves accelerate faster and are more powerful, and rear wheel drive gives the driver better control over steering when the car is accelerating.

Cars With Front Wheel Drive

During the 1970's, cars needed to become more fuel efficient because of a fuel crisis that was taking place. Front wheel drive cars are generally more fuel efficient, not to mention their performance on snow or ice covered roads is generally better. With front wheel drive cars, the weight is mostly centered over the front wheels, which helps prevent sliding on slippery roads. While the weight is useful during winter months, it may contribute to the car having less maneuverability overall compared to rear wheel drive cars.

Choosing between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive is something you should choose based on how you plan to drive. Coastal Nissan has cars in both front and rear wheel drive, and it may be a good idea to test drive both at our Boston Nissan dealership to help you make your decision.
