If at least 75% of the auto repair shop staff is ASE certified, and if there is at least one ASE certified technician for each service the auto repair shop offers, the shop qualifies for the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition Program (BSRP). The ASE Blue Seal of Excellence plaque is then displayed prominently in the auto repair shop. This recognition is valid for a year and is renewed only after proper inspection to ensure that staff credentials remain valid and updated.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence gives some tips on how to choose an ASE certified auto repair shop. First, read through your vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the recommended service schedule indicated by the manufacturer. Before the need for repair crops up, find an auto repair shop by asking for recommendations from friends and family. If you are new to an area and do not know anyone to ask yet, check the local yellow pages. Take a list of possible choices to your local Better Business Bureau and check for any complaints lodged against them plus any unresolved complaints. Also take the list to other local consumer organizations for counter-checking.
You would want to personally visit the choices that pass the initial check. Look for the ASE certification of the technicians or, better yet, the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence. Also seek out AAA-Approved Auto Repair status and other customer service and civic service awards. Ask for the range of services they offer, their fees, the warranties they offer, the modes of payment they accept and all of their policies. In the process, observe how courteous and helpful the staff is and how well they answer your questions and explain their services.
