The fenders are integral parts of a car. They are contoured in such a way that they flow along the shape of the wheel compartment. Fenders are basically designed for wheel protection. They serve as a sturdy base for the wheels of the car. One can only imagine what will happen to a car driven through rocky terrains without fenders. At the very least, the result would certainly be unsightly. There’s a good chance that the wheels would end up encountering a great deal of road debris. While this is a common result of road travel, rocky terrains often have road debris that is tough and difficult to get rid of, more so than what is normally found in streets and highways. Without fender flares, the car’s wheels get the full brunt of contact with these elements. This does not exactly make for an ideal situation. Imagine a wheel striking a tiny pebble which consequently hits the wheel right back. Because the pebble was propelled into motion by a fast-moving object—which is the car, in this case—it’ll hit the wheel at a rapid velocity as well.
Thus, even if one’s wheels happen to be sturdy, a considerable number of encounters of this sort will be all it takes before the wheel ends up being driven to the ground. When they finally crash, inanimate objects propelled at a rapid velocity—even those as small and seemingly insignificant as pebbles—inevitably invite heavy impact, which in turn, leads to possible wheel impairment.
Thus, one common way to improve wheel protection is to install some fender flares. These devices upgrade wheel safety of any car. Fender flares are commonly found in bigger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. But with normal sedans or coupes, fender flares work, too. Fender skirts are also another way for car owners to step up on their wheel protection. These “skirts” are critically crafted exteriors which seal the little space between the fender and the wheels. One does not have to worry about friction woes either since these skirts are meticulously designed in such a way that the wheels will not rub against them. It is often recommended that fender skirts be installed in car models that need no air going through the car’s body. This is because air can reduce speed. In the end, installing fender flares is not all about jazzing up a car’s appearance. It also brings wheel protection and performance to another level.
