Enjoy a taste of the past by renting a classic car

Posted: May 24, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Cars have come a long way since the first experiment at motorised transport took a hold in the thoughts of a primeval piston head. Early enthusiasts, such as Benz, pushed the boundaries of what could be accomplished with the combustion engine. It is thanks to him and these early pioneers that we now have automobiles capable of 60 miles to the gallon, boasting safety and comfort features previously unheard of.

Yet for all the comfort and safety of the modern motor car, something is missing in most of these, namely a soul. Only super cars are now left as reminders of the fact that vehicles can have temperaments and personality. Most of us have had to compromise on the cars of our adolescent dreams, with practical estates and sensible hatchbacks parked in the majority of driveways.

Progress has left the romance of the car long behind. That is not to say that the past is completely forgotten; there is a way to taste the delights of a classic car by hiring cars such as the Alfa Romeo Spider, Ferrari 308, or indeed being James Bond for a day in a classic DB series Aston Martin. A variety of specialist car hire companies exist, keeping the dreams of the past alive with a fleet of cars that could excite even the most casual of motoring enthusiasts.

The variety of cars on offer is almost limitless, ranging from the whimsical, such as the Volkswagen Campervan ideal for a carefree potter down country lanes to the sublime HMC Austin Healey, marrying the classic Austin Healey looks to a modern running gear, luxury fittings and a powerful 3.9 litre V8 engine. Or indeed the revolutionary styling of the DeLorean which will take most people back to 1985 and the famous Back to the Future films.

Whatever your heart's desire, it is more than likely available for hire. Best of all, the thrill of driving these cars can be had without the financial burden of massive insurance premiums, worries about fitting the shopping in the boot, or the many mechanical issues these older cars often have. A weekend hire is often more than enough for most motorists and capable of turning even the shortest of bank holiday weekends into a truly memorable experience. A gleaming classic MGB roadster, or Alfa Romeo Spider waiting outside the hire company when you arrive, is in itself an invitation to a perfect weekend. All this without the worry of getting the car serviced or having to find out the price of a windscreen fitting for your 1971 Ford Mustang.
