Getting The Most Out Of Your Car's Mileage

Posted: Feb 04, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Every mile that your car drives takes a toll on the mechanical and cosmetic makeup of your vehicle. Bumpy roads, smooth blacktop, and gravelly driveways all affect your car's overall health in their respective ways. Instead of investing thousands of dollars in your vehicle and then leaving it to the mercy of the environment, wouldn't you rather do everything possible to get the most out of every mile? The following tips will help you keep your car running long after it's hit the 100,000 mile mark. In fact, with recent advances in technology and maintenance techniques, your car should easily remain dependable for years. With the proper care and the right amount of attention you could truly benefit from the investment you make.

• Watch the roads you drive on. If it's possible to take a paved road instead of a dirt road, do it. Also, remember that just because a road is paved does not mean it is a safe or nonthreatening roadway. Potholes, sinkholes, and cracks in the pavement can all cause formidable damage to the undercarriage of your car (not to mention the danger of losing control of your vehicle if you hit one of these obstacles too fast).

• Maintenance is a must. Don't ignore your car until it breaks down or loses a tire. Preventative trips to the mechanic will keep your vehicle running like new and will prevent expensive repairs and towing bills later on. Regular oil changes and tune-ups will allow your car to not only go for many miles, but to get the best gas mileage while it continues chugging along.

• Pay attention to your tires. It's true, tires are easily forgotten until one of the bursts or goes flat; however, with even a few minutes of attention per month you will be able to prevent major damage by keeping a close eye on the tread and inflating your tires with an appropriate amount of air. Too much or too little air can cause a blow out or a flat. Tread that has been worn away will have little to no traction, leaving you vulnerable to the oils, dirt, and water on the road.

• Keep your car clean. While this may seem like a superfluous suggestion, it can be important to the maintenance of the mechanical aspects of your car. A clean exterior will be free of build up and dirt, which can easily find its way into the engine or gas tank. Additionally, regular baths for your vehicle will allow it to stay looking like new for as long as the engine is running like new.

When considering how to best spend your money, isn't it a good idea to contribute to the success of an investment you've already made? If you have already spent thousands of dollars buying and insuring your car, why not pay a fraction of the cost to ensure that you don't have to purchase another one any time soon? By adhering to these tips you will be well on your way to extending your car's lifespan by years (and saving your budget by thousands).
