Written by Vauxhall: Find out more about, New Cars Scrappage Scheme
A new government initiative called the ‘scrappage scheme’ was launched earlier this year. The idea of the scheme is that if motorists have a car that is ten years old or more they can scrap the car and receive a large discount on the price of a new car.
The idea is to stimulate the car market and to remove older, more polluting vehicles from the road. However research has suggested that many motorists have found better deals, with larger discounts on new cars, elsewhere.
Parkers, the price guide for cars, surveyed a cross section of motorists and found that 70% of motorists criticised the scheme for not offering enough of an incentive and 81% of motorists said they had no intention of participating in the scrappage scheme.
The scheme offers a £1,000 subsidiary from the government to scrap your car in favour of a new car, and the manufacturers of the new cars should offer a similar amount.
Initially the UK motor industry requested that the government offer £2,000 per car to make the scheme more tempting. The German government offer a similar scheme to the scrappage scheme, and they’re offering much more than the UK government. The German scheme also offers the scheme on purchases of cars that less than one year old, as well as purchases on new cars.
