Great Tips for Changing the Air Filters in Your Car

Ever wondered what exactly air filters do in a car? Look no further. Air filters go a long way in preventing dust the accumulation of dust and even insects that have been trapped in the engine and keeping the engine free from barriers that interfere with air circulation. It highly recommended that one changes a car's air filter yearly, or better yet, after traveling for 15,000 kilometers. This is different for those living in dusty areas as they will be forced to do the replacement after 10,000 km.

This is mainly because a blocked air filter can result to performance problems like decreasing the vehicle's power which can in turn result to perilous situations especially when traveling on a highway with limited access or even a slope. However, the greatest danger is posed when the blocked air filter affect the gas mileage of the car. Changing the air filter or even cleaning it up aids in the flow of air as proper airflow aids in getting rid of all particles that clog the filter. This activity will only require ten minutes of your time, and if one has to take it to an expert, it is quite affordable; a small price to pay for a safe drive.

Shopping for the correct filter for replacement is very important. The replacement filter that is bought should resemble the one already in place. Much as filter replacement is a simple task, it is advisable for the user to go through the manual from the manufacturers so as to find out if he or she will need a hand from an expert to help them fix the new air filter.

Before starting the replacement, it is advisable to have the car on flat ground. Precaution should be taken to avoid any accidents and this includes making use of the parking brake for automatically controlled vehicles or first gear for cars that are manually operated. The next step is to turn the ignition key off. Open the bonnet and then shift the bonnet catch that is on the outer side so as to allow for the complete release. Afterwards, raise the bonnet and stabilize it using the provided prop rod. After ensuring that the bonnet is well secured, one should try and find out where the air filter unit is located.

The next step is to remove the cover of the filter and this is done by releasing the clamp that covers the conductor. Unlike ones with clamped filters, some cars are fitted using screws or bolts and these needs to be removed carefully. After removing the cover, a circular or rectangular material that is made from cotton or wire gauze is exposed and this is the filter. This is easily lifted from its housing.

After blowing out the dust using the compressed air and dust using a vacuum cleaner, the housing of the air filter is also cleaned up. Then the filter is replaced with the new one and one should ensure that the rim faces upwards and the ends are properly sealed by the rim which is made from rubber. The cover is then returned and the unit is good to go. It is recommended that car owners check the filter regularly and change them when required.
