Hubcap: Why You Need 1

Posted: Jan 27, 2011 |
A hubcap, more popularly known as wheel cover, is a flat round disk that is used to fit the center space of a vehicle's wheels. A wheel cover can be made up of either aluminum, steel, or high-grade plastics. For a more durable wheel cover, either an aluminum or steel wheel cover will do. Meanwhile, if you want a more flexible wheel cover, there's the plastic hubcap which is flexible enough to fit different make and models of cars.

Hubcaps have evolved tremendously since they were first used during the 1930s, from hubcaps that measure a little less than 4" in diameter to those that measure large enough to fit the entire wheel including the edges of tires. Modern day hubcaps have also become more functional and are now available in unique and trendy colors and eye-catching styles and designs.

While many car owners see wheel covers as decorative vehicle accessories, some consider these as protective coverings for wheels, which they've always been since the 1930s. Early-day modes of transportation, including buggy and wagons, make use of wheel covers to protect the wheels and keep harmful particles from getting into the wheels and eating away crucial parts like wheel bearing and spindle nuts. Wheel covers were used to seal the wheel hub of such modes of transportation.

Today, wheel covers still function the way they used to. They are still known to protect the important parts of the wheels and keep the wheels in excellent condition. They, however, are much more functional, more useful, and more in-demand than they used to.

Today, hubcaps are primarily used as decorative car accessories; although they pretty much have the same basic function. You can provide your vehicles a more elegant and slick look by choosing from the different colors and styles of wheel covers that are now widely available.

The industry of hubcaps continues to grow each day. The market has a huge selection of these decorative car accessories, providing you many different ways and endless possibilities to decorate your car and make it more attractive and eye-catching. There are those that are built with chrome plating, closely resembling Frisbees for their flat round shapes, and there are also non-coated plastic hubcaps. You can also choose hubcaps that have classic and elegant designs, as well as those designed with intriguing yet unique spoke patterns. By exploring opportunities and visiting hubcap suppliers, you will definitely find a wheel cover that will perfectly fit the color as well as the make and model of your car.

Aside from classy and elegant designs, modern day hubcaps are now available in different styles. Two of the most popular ones are the clip-on hubcaps and the bolt-on hubcaps. Clip-on hubcaps are built with a spring steel clip that can be grooved into the wheels; plastic clip if it's a plastic hubcap. The bolt-on hubcaps, on the other hand, are built with threaded fastener which keeps the hubcaps in place.

Whether you will be using a hubcap as a decorative accessory or as a protective cover for your wheels, it is definitely important that you choose the one that best matches your vehicle's color, make, and model. You can even have your wheel cover personalized with the many different stores that offer such option. And, of course, you can choose between using secondhand and brand new hubcaps depending on your preference and on your budget.
