Although it may sound tricky, transferring an Irish number plate to a UK vehicle is an easy process, providing you buy your number plate through a reputable dealer who will handle the transfer process for you. The transfer process for Irish registrations typically takes around four weeks. In a strange twist of fate, however, drivers in Northern Ireland generally aren’t keen on their national number plates and often buy DVLA registrations to place on their vehicles on the Emerald Isle. It just goes to show that British number plates really do have a far-reaching appeal.
It must be noted, though, that although Northern Irish number plates may be freely transferred to mainland Britain and vice versa, the same is not true for registrations from the Republic of Ireland, which are not usually eligible for transfer to UK vehicles.
