Salvage yards are not only places where vehicles are stored but also where their usable parts are removed and sold for usage in other automobiles. A salvage yard will usually contain vehicles that are either very old or relatively new. These relatively new vehicles are normally brought to a salvage yard when they have fallen victim to irreparable damages typically as the result of a collision. Once these vehicles are taken to salvage yards they will be placed in systematic rows and inventoried for better organization and easier sourcing. Some salvage yards employ the use of computerized inventory systems in which all the parts or motor vehicles on the lot are tagged with a special code and entered in a database. There may also be showrooms which will present the parts that are removed from each automobile. These new innovations have revamped the way salvage yards are perceived and operated. No longer are they simply seen as storage areas but instead as fully operational profitable businesses.
The vehicles as mentioned before will be utilized for their working parts. Each vehicle may be assessed and analysed by a trained mechanic who works at the salvage yard. Once an inspection of the car is completed then the usable parts are removed starting with the more superficial parts like the mirrors, bumper and headlights, then the major parts are assessed and removed. All these parts are inventoried and placed in a database for greater efficiency. In some instances the parts may remain in the car and be removed as demand arises. These parts may be sold to individuals for personal use or to manufacturers who will recondition these parts for resale with a specialized warranty. When the automobile has no functioning parts left in it, the metal from it may be sold as scrap metal to a metal recycling factory.
Louisiana like most other states has a great number of salvage yards. If you live in Louisiana and are in the market for parts or would like to have a vehicle moved to the salvage yard you may search a list of online sources.
