Nissan Juke - the future look of the 4x4?
The new Nissan Juke was first revealed to the public at the Paris Motor Show in February 2010 and hit UK dealerships nationwide in September 2010. Since its launch, the car has caused quite a stir; not least thanks to its unconventional and distinctive styling. Nissan has high hopes for this ground-breaking compact crossover model.
This sporty super mini has a high riding position and a top of the range petrol engine model and comes with four wheel drive. The Juke truly comes into its own in the top of the range 4x4 package. The 1.6 engine makes the most of its power and its responsive go-kart style handling is likely to raise a smile with most motorists. The top of the range engine is mated to Nissan's ground-breaking XTRONIC CVT transmission, providing a six-speed manual mode and with lateral torque-vectoring; a first in the small car segment as this technology has previously only been found on top-of-the-range and considerably more expensive vehicles, such as the BMW X6 and the new Porsche 911.
The 4x4 uses the latest generation ALL-MODE 4x4i with torque vectoring for enhanced agility and reduced under-steer when cornering. The majority of reviews have praised the car for its stability and firmness of ride, as well as responsiveness.
Inside, the car is packed with features and a wealth of control options. There is even a screen that can show your cornering G-force, like in the GT-R super-saloon. Driver and passenger comfort is good, though the sloping rear roof can be an issue with taller passengers. Nissan quality is evident throughout the interior and with Nissan finishing in the top half of the 2010 JD Power customer satisfaction survey; it's not likely to be too problematic in maintaining. The entry level price for the car is equally attractive with an on the road price of £19,995, with the range-topping specification including leather upholstery, Nissan Connect, a reversing camera, Intelligent key with engine start button and much more.
Already the car has succeeded in claiming a variety of awards, a five star Euro NCAP safety rating and thanks to its striking exterior and wealth of features, it has seen sales accelerate to 32,000 sales across Europe. Some 35 per cent of these sales have been for the top Tekna grade model, showing that Nissan can compete on equal terms with premium brands in the B segment.
It seems that Nissan have provided a unique rethink of the 4x4 vehicle, providing a compact car, that is comfortable both in the city and off road, meaning that a trip down a country lane won't mean a trip to the windscreen fitters afterward!
