Obtain An International Driver’s Permit

There is a great amount of freedom in being able to just get up and go. Traveling is a great way to discover new places. Many people prefer to drive while traveling so that they can stop in many different places along the way. However, there are many countries that do not allow you to drive with only a license from your own country or state. Many European countries are like this. In order to drive there, you must first obtain an international driver’s permit. You should always look into this type of thing ahead of time so that your trip does not become delayed.

Getting your hands on an international driver’s permit is not really all that difficult. You will need to have your U.S. driver’s license and it must be valid. Make sure that it is completely up to date and will not need to be renewed while you are out of the country. If the date of renewal will take place while you are away then you should renew it before you leave. You need to go through an application process for an international driver’s permit. This often requires two passport photos so you will have to get these done if you do not already have them. Usually you can get passport photos done at any photography place or drugstore.

There are just two places in the United States that are authorized to the grant you an international driver’s permit. You will have to go to one of these two places in order to get your IDP. One of them is the American Automobile Association. The other one is the American Automobile Touring Alliance. You can easily find the application form on-line via one of the web sites for either organization. Look it up and fill it out as completely as possible. Try not to leave anything out otherwise; your application could be rejected.

Once you have managed to successfully complete the application form, get in touch with the agency that you sent it to. Make sure to ask them where their closest office is as well as how much it is going to cost you when you go to pick up your IDP. There are a few other things that you should also take care to do. For one, it is always essential that you study all traffic laws and rules for the place that you will be visiting. Not every place has the same laws as America so educate yourself before you depart.

Once you have been given your international driver’s permit you will be legally allowed to drive in up to 150 countries outside of the United States of America. This is a very serious responsibility.  Driving anywhere should always be done with the utmost in care. Share the road and always try to stay patient no matter where you are. Driving internationally is a fun and rewarding experience that should always be handled maturely. Apply for your international driver’s permit well in advance. Being organized allows you to focus on the fun aspects of travel.
