Pontiac is known for its powerful line up of vehicles that have been earning an impressive reputation since their first debut in the automotive industry more than eight decades ago. Among the various parts comprising your suspension system is the Pontiac ball joint. This car component contributes two basic functions in your vehicle. One is by supporting the entire weight of your vehicle. Another is by serving as pivot points between the suspension and your tires. In some cases, this suspension component can also help in setting the wheel alignment, depending upon the specifications of the vehicle. As a steering linkage support, your Pontiac ball joint allows your wheels and tires to be easily maneuvered because it links the front axle to the wheels. You can usually locate this car component at the front end of your car. However, the number of ball joints installed on your ride depends upon the type of suspension system that you are using. Conventional suspension systems are equipped with a lower ball joint and an upper ball joint. On the other hand, MacPherson strut suspension systems are made up of an upper strut bearing and a single lower ball joint.
Your Pontiac ball joint is able to effectively perform its intended function because of the sub components comprising it. Basically, it is made up a bearing, hardened-steel, and socket that are protected in a steel housing. The housing is of socket-type construction to keep your ball joints properly protected from damage-causing elements like dirt and water. Some ball joints can be lubricated, while others are”lubed for life”, which means they cannot be lubricated. If your Pontiac ball joint comes with a lubrication fitting, then it is highly advisable that you keep it properly lubricated especially during oil change. Failed ball joints can be attributed to accumulated dirt. Lowered cars can also be a candidate for a possible ball joint failure. You can tell that your ball joints are damaged if you have been experiencing some wandering, knocking noise, erratic steering, and uneven tire wear. When this happens, do not think twice on replacing the worn out ball joints of your Pontiac with a new one in order to maintain the excellent ride control and handling of your car.
