Scandinavia Brings Over The Car's Daytime Running Lights To The UK

Posted: Jan 14, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

From 2011, EU ruling states that cars will be required to have daytime running lights. Daytime running lights originate from Scandinavia, where darkness encompasses the Scandinavian countries for a large amount of the year. These daytime running lights enable you to see on the road in the daytime when it is darker in the cold winter months, without blinding you and others, helping you to be safer on the road.

Headlight glare is a big problem in countries that currently don't use daytime running lights, as it is said to cause more accidents. The EU has discovered that thus so far, DRL (daytime running lights), could potentially save a great number of lives on the road.

But with the rising cost of fuel, it may be difficult for some to afford the high energy consuming DRLs or to replace headlights with DRLs. However, the EU hopes to introduce low energy DRLs in line with lowering the amount of emissions that was committed to in the Kyoto protocol, enabling us to keep our roads safer with minimal cost. Already models with LED daytime running lights have been introduced, which consume less energy than a normal headlight. Using environmentally friendly DRL's will also mean you won't have to use tail lights and other unnecessary lights during the day, which normally consume quite a bit of energy. For instance, the energy used by a DRL is far less at between 5-10 watts, whilst headlamps consume over 100 watts. However, DRL's automatically start when you turn your engine on, automatically consuming energy.

The European ruling for DRL is that any newly manufactured car or van is to have daytime running lights included from February 2011. Buses and trucks will also have to legally follow in august 2012. For drivers with cars older than February 2011, it will not be a legal requirement to fit DRLs in Europe, nor will it be illegal not to run headlamps in the daytime.
