A recent survey carried out by a leading British insurer highlighted a few surprises when it comes to personalised number plate ownership in the UK. The traditional image of the personalised plate owner may not be quite as accurate as we first thought.
The survey showed that if you have a personalised number plate you are more likely to live in Scotland than any other part of the UK. Out of the top 20 postcode districts for number plate purchases 8 are found in Scotland.
Coming a surprise top of the list are the villages of Fintry, Killearn and Strathblane in Stirlingshire where 14.02% of all number plates are personalised. Coming out bottom of the list is with the least personalised plates is Grimsby Docks in England.
Second on the list were the villages of Anlaby and Kirk Ella near Hull where 11.98% of all number plates are personalised, while third came Llangefni in Anglesey in Wales with 11.88%.
Other Scottish areas which were found high up on the list include Dundee city centre, Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway and Pencaitland in East Lothian.
The survey also showed that perhaps unsurprisingly luxury cars are more likely to have personalised plates than any other type of car. Owners of Ferraris are far more likely to have a personalised plate than the car that finished bottom of the list the Citroen BX. Number plates have clearly become something of a status symbol for many people and are a way for drivers to express individuality.
The survey also interestingly showed that its not just people from more up market areas with high flying jobs who own personalised number plates. Occupations that top the list include farriers, construction machinery operators and newsagents. The large majority of personalised number plate owners were found to live in rural areas, especially areas in Scotland rather than in major cities. The jobs at the very top of the list were nursing home owners and local government chief executives. Newspaper photographers and croupiers were the professions least likely to own a personalised plate.

Number Plate Recognition Systems used in Advertising
By: Jayne Henry | 24/11/2009 | AutomotiveYou may be familiar with Automatic Number Plate Recognition, or ANPR, technology. You may also be aware of its main use: acting as a tool to read license plates. The most familiar examples of this occurring are when an ANPR program monitors static cameras or is used in mobile devices by police officers. These license plates are then compared to a database of insured and uninsured cars, and if the car is found to be uninsured but still on the road, measures are taken.

Car Sales Recovering from September 09
By: Jayne Henry | 07/10/2009 | AutomotiveOne of the signs of the recession to many was the declining sales of the new cars market. When people have less money, they tend to purchase cars second hand, and stick with the cars they already have for much longer. This has been backed up by car factories closing and showrooms finding it much harder to generate profits. This has remained true in the recent recession.
