Stop Idling Your Car
To keep you car's engine in a healthy state, and to keep your car in general out of an auto body shop, here is a good tip to keep in mind: Do not idle your car. Why you ask? For every two minutes a car is idling, it uses about the same amount of fuel it takes to go about one mile. Research has indicated that the average person idles their car five to ten minutes a day and people more often idle their cars in the winter. But even in winter, you don't need to let your car sit and idle for five minutes to "warm it up." Just 30 seconds will do. In fact, the best way to warm up your car is by driving it.
The rule of thumb is, if you are going to be parked for more than 30 seconds, turn off your car's engine. Excessive idling actually does more harm than good. It can damage your engine components, including cylinders, spark plugs and exhaust systems. Fuel is actually only partially combusted when idling because an engine does not operate at its peak temperature. This can lead to build up of fuel residues on the walls of your cylinders, damaging engine components and increasing fuel consumption. Many people assume that shutting off and then restarting your vehicle is more damaging on the engine and uses more gas. This is an incorrect assumption. In fact, frequent restarting has little impact on an engine's components like the battery and the starter motor.
We hope this cleared up some myths for you because at Ditchek and Sons Auto Body Supply, we sincerely care about helping preserve the longevity of your vehicle.
