Tips on Finding and Negotiating Rental Car Rates

Frequent business travelers rent cars without much thought, often going with the vendor their company has selected or picking the best deal from multiple vendors they deal with. But for less frequent travelers, say those going on vacation or traveling less frequently for business or personal reasons, the rental car process can be a bit confusing, and an easy one to spend more money on than needed.

Rely on Proven Methods When Renting a Car

When looking to rent a car, the easiest way to do it is to rely on proven methods that work. So for those of you traveling soon or needing rental care services, here are pointers on what to do to ensure you get the right rental car at the right price. First off, consider applying to one of the programs like Avis, Hertz, Budget, or National. If you check their websites, you can find out the specific prices of their cars in cities you're looking for. And if you're a member of their website, you can get a discount or an upgrade option for the same price. Don't hesitate to compare prices either - you may be surprised at the differences charged by companies for the same car in the same market. The website below is available for you to compare resources.

What to do once at your location

Whether or not you've reserved or rented your car online ahead of time, you'll still have another chance to negotiate for a better deal. Once you're at your destination, most likely the airport, be prepared to do some negotiating for the car you want. It's difficult to negotiate in the moment without knowing exactly what you want - so it may help to write down how much you're willing to pay, what type of car you want, and what you'd like to upgrade to. Presenting AAA cards, military service, or student ID cards is another way to let the rental company know that you have an affiliation worthy of a discount. Finally, keep this line in mind when you're at the rental car location - simply say "I'd like to receive X car for the price of Y car - can I have it?" Also, when asked about various insurance package upgrades, remember that your current auto insurance probably covers the rental company's insurance package. Check with your insurer first. Depending on the time of day, day of week, and availability of cars in the lot, you may be able to negotiate for a better car at a lower price. And go about your personal or business travel knowing that you've begun your time as an informed and resourceful consumer.
