Toyota Halts: Rivals Pounce

Posted: Jan 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Well, word of Toyota's accelerator problem is all over the place, and it's

likely to be sticking around for some time.  However, Toyota is working quickly

to halt the damage with the goal of restoring consumer confidence and its vehicle

sales.

It is suspected that a Toyota supplier, CTS Corporation located in Elkhart,

Indiana was the supplier of the accelerators.  The accelerator pedals were

made for Toyota at a CTS plant located outside Toronto, Canada.

CTS is reportedly working with Toyota on a new accelerator pedal design

and testing.  CTS will ship the replacement accelerators to Toyota dealers

and the automaker will update the recalled Toyota vehicles.

Of note is that CTS not only makes accelerator pedals for Toyota but also

for the other Japanese automakers Nissan and Honda.

Meanwhile, Ford and GM are trying to pounce on the situation in an

effort to increase their vehicle sales and market share.  Ford is reportedly

offering drivers who trade in a Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Acura or Honda an

extra $1,000 off a new Ford vehicle.  GM is reportedly offering drivers

who trade in a Toyota or Lexus $1,000, or waiving 3 vehicle payments up

to $1,000, or 0 percent financing for 60 months.

Well, regarding this incentive, at lease Ford and GM are now offering

some vehicles that are indeed competitive with Toyotas prior to the recall.

I have reported on these vehicles in articles of the San Francisco Examiner

(Examiner.com).  The vehicles include the Cadillac CTS, the Chevy Malibu

and Equinox, the Buick Lacrosse, and the Ford Fusion and Focus.

It is a wild automotive industry to say the least!

Some automakers celebrated large percent increases in February while others saw smaller increases. Michigan GMC dealers may have contributed to the high numbers General Motors reported.

All of the buzz about the recent massive recalls Toyota is in the process of making on its innovative Prius vehicle is sending the wrong message to consumers. But it’s happened in the past to other leading manufacturers; roughly 250 deaths are linked to Ford Explorers a couple of years ago with defective tires, and one year Ford pickups were spontaneously combusting due to a faulty ignition switch.
