Used Car Buying Tips

Posted: Jan 08, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

There are many benefits to buying a used car over a brand new car from the dealership, but there are also some important aspects you should consider prior to diving in head first on the first "deal" you think you have come across. Anyone who wants to get a used vehicle should be sure to ask the right questions and be aware of the deceptive practices and the benefits of a smart purchase. When buying a used car, it is important to be very thorough in your research so that you not only get a great value, but also do not acquire a bigger headache in the end.
Some important points to consider are below.

1. Used Car vs. New Car

You can save a lot of money buying a used car and something that should be considered is that a new car depreciates quickly. We've all heard the common complaint that the moment a new car is driven off the lot it loses value, which is absolutely true. In fact, a new vehicle is only worth at least 50% of its original value after the first 3 years of its ownership. New cars have benefits too and the higher cost you pay is beneficial in terms of freshness and the fact that it includes a warranty that will cover many potential mechanical issues that come up. There are cases where you can still get a warranty for a used car, but that usually requires additional cost from a third party provider and another topic that requires a whole lot more research.

2. Check the Car's History

Carfax is your friend. Use it as it will give you the best transparency when it comes to buying that gem of a used car you find. This is something you do not need to worry about when buying a new car because, well, it's new. Checking into a cars history will allow you to feel comfortable in your purchase as you will know exactly what types of issues it has had in the past. You'll be glad to hear if a car you thought was a great value was caught in a flood just a year or two back. Also be sure to check for major accidents.

3. Cheap or good?

Pick one! Generally you should not expect to get both. If you do your homework and are a good negotiator than you do have a good chance of getting the best deal, but cheap does not always equate to good and good is rarely cheap. Kelley Blue Book is a very good tool for determining a reasonable price for a vehicle.

If you are not a specialist in car questions, you may want to ask for an experts help. There are a few good resources out there, but the guys at vsportusa.com can be very helpful. They specialize in used cars in San Luis Obispo, but can assist anyone anywhere with questions and can even assist in finding great deals online.

Whatever you do make sure you know what you want, know your budget and do your research.
