Vehicle Donation: How the Economic Downturn is Affecting Charities

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you will know that the world has been hit by a financial crisis and America, along with many other countries, is facing a long struggle towards recovery. Businesses and people have been hit pretty badly and overall spending has fallen dramatically. Apart from hurting businesses like retail, the housing market and small businesses, it has also majorly affected the motor industry. With less people buying and selling their cars, used cars have dramatically decreased in value.

You may not realize this, but the economic downturn and the resulting alterations to the used car market have also effected charities. Charitable organizations, such as The American Red Cross and Goodwill Industries, are being affected by a huge drop in funding, due largely to a decline in donations. Because of this, major charities are starting to consider some other funding alternatives. In the past, you would be able to claim tax relief if you donated your car to charity. This can still be done. However, many people are finding it to be less beneficial than in the past. The new rules state that the tax deduction you claim must be based on the actual market value of the car. As the market value of most cars has declined drastically many people see this as being not worth the effort. Vehicle donation is in decline as a result.

However, auto donation is still vitally important to many charities. It can still also be beneficial to the donor too.. Charities are now trying to increase awareness of vehicle donation and say that it is still a worthwhile action. I would most definitely look at all the options if I wanted to donate my car in this climate. There are very limited options available that prove to be better than donating a car in receiving tax breaks. Car donation is a worth considering even in this turbulent economy, since the tax relief can help you to keep your money out of the government’s greedy hands, and securely in your pocket.
