Winter Safety Tips

The winter months are upon us and driving through the rain, snow, sleet, ice and wind can be frightening for some drivers, especially newer ones. Driving through winter conditions doesn't have to be such a hassle or such a scary thing to do. If you understand the simple safety precautions you can take to ensure a safe ride, then it will be pretty easy to get through.

Always make sure you have at least a half a tank of gas in your car wherever you are going during the winter months. You don't want to get into a long trip with no gas stations in sight and realize you are closing in on an empty tank.

Before you embark on a driving excursion, place a winter kit in your car. The winter kit should include everything from a flashlight to batteries to gloves, a hat, a blanket and anything else you feel is appropriate for your warmth in case your car breaks down in the dead of winter. Also, make sure you have an ice scraper in your car and make sure it is a durable one and isn't too old. You don't want the ice scraper breaking in your hand when trying to clean the ice off of your windows, windshield and rear view mirror.

Check your tire pressure every couple of weeks to make sure there is enough air in all four tires and even the spare tire. Low tire pressure causes strain on the vehicle and can even cause you to get into an accident.

Know what to do when you are driving in extremely bad conditions and can't avoid driving because you are on your way home from work or elsewhere. Make sure you know how to handle yourself on roads that are still covered in snow, know where black ice can form, and know how to drive your vehicle when you begin to fishtail. You can practice these techniques one night in a large, empty parking lot that has yet to be plowed; such as a school or office campus.

A lot of states across the country use different slogans on street signs on the highways to promote safety. One popular slogan used in a majority of the East coast states is "take five, stay alive." Even though this slogan pertains to driving year round, it is especially important during the winter months. Why? Because wherever you are going, if the weather is not suitable for driving, you are going to want to take some extra time out of your day and leave for your destination a couple of minutes ahead of time. This allows for any congestion, accidents or other problems you might encounter along the way. Also, if you are running late you might be coerced into speeding and in winter weather that is not a good combination.

Overall, if you follow these few winter safety tips, you should have a safe trip when the weather turns nasty. Don't forget that winter car kit and to always have at least a half a tank of gas at all times.
