Teething is a natural phenomena in growing babies. Generally, baby teething has no pattern on when it will begin, how long it will take, or how painful it can be for babies.
As a parent, it is important for you to know that some babies grow their tooth overnight without feeling any pain, while there are babies who go through the process for a long period of time, unfortunately experiencing pain. Also, baby teething has a certain hereditary pattern. This means that if both parents experienced early or late teething, there is a big chance that their baby follows the same pattern.
Symptoms of Teething
The symptoms of teething actually vary from one baby to another. Below are some of the common symptoms of baby teething:
Drooling
Too much drooling is normal for babies who are three to four months old. This is a strong indication that the baby is already teething.
Irritability
Once you baby starts to grow teeth, his gums may become too painful and sore, thus, making your baby very irritable and fussy. However, every baby may experience different reaction to teething.
Chin rash.
This symptom is associated with drooling. As your baby drools, it goes down to his chin, thus, causing rashes to his skin. You can always wipe your baby's chin and mouth periodically to avoid skin rashes.
Cold and fever symptoms
Babies who are teething may also show symptoms of cold and fever. Your baby may feel hot and may have runny nose as well as coughing.
Teething pain relief
Now that the common symptoms of teething are expounded, the next things you need to know is how to ease your baby's teething pain. The following are some tips that you can do to give your baby teething pain relief:
Let your baby chew.
When your baby starts teething, you have to give him something that he can chew. Specialty baby stores have teething rings or rubber toys that can help lessen your baby's teething pain. You can opt to put these things on the freezer to chill, for the cold can further ease his mouth and gums.
Give your baby cold water.
Drinking small amounts of cold water can ease your baby's teething pain and discomfort. This will also help replace the liquids lost due to your baby's constant drooling.
Apply teething gel.
You can apply teething gel to your baby's gum to numb the sore and painful areas. Ask your pharmacist about these gel products that you can use for your baby's teething pain.
Rub your baby's gums.
You can use your fingers or a chilled spoon to massage or rub your baby's gums. This can reduce the teething pain and discomfort that your baby is experiencing.
Take your baby to the doctor.
You can talk to your baby's doctor about his teething pain. Ask for prescription or over-the-counter pain reliever that your baby can take to reduce pain. Strictly follow your doctor's advice on whatever he recommends to ease your baby's teething pain.
