Susan Brochman is a freelance writer and a mother of seven. One of her articles shares her experiences related to the birth of her triplets – all girls. Susan said that the selection of names was not an easy process for her and her husband. The names given to their children had to have special Name Meanings so with each pregnancy the task had been dubious. Susan says that coming up with three meaningful Girl Names at once was overwhelming but through the process narrowing down the names on her lists she and her husband were able to find three beautiful names, all with special meanings!
The realization that you are pregnant often brings with it lots of questions and indecisiveness. Although a fun and exciting time, preparation for your new baby can be stressful. One of the tasks that you never thought would be difficult is a basic one – choosing your baby’s name!
Many parents-to-be choose potential names long before they are pregnant. For some, it is important to use the name of a special relative or friend and for others there simply may be a name that has a particular meaning. But sometimes one parent has ideas that the other does not necessarily hold. Another common situation is that family members have relentless suggestions and ideas for the name.
Perhaps the mommy-to-be may have always planned to name her son or daughter after favorite movie stars. But the daddy-to-be does not care for those stars, or even for the names. Or what if your preferred names are now the names of nieces or nephews - should those names still be used?
Okay, relax, take a deep breath and very selectively begin making baby names lists. Consider one for favorite names, one for family names, and then begin making a list of names that you definitely do not like now that you see them on paper. Although simplistic in nature, this method can alleviate some of the stress.
After you have your lists complete it is time to allow your husband to look them over and add to or even shorten each list. You may need to be patient with him; after all, you had time to think about these lists as you put them together.
After your husband has added his ideas it is time for the two of you to discuss why you do or do not like a name. Honesty is important in this situation – if a name reminds you of someone or something you should discuss that. Compromising may be the key to finding the right name for your baby. Choosing a name that satisfies both of you may not be an easy process, but it is definitely a worthwhile task!
