Baby and Celiac Disease

Newborn baby care needs the great attention of parents like diagnosing different diseases in the babies. Celiac disease is a condition where the child becomes weak and is unable to gain weight. This happens when a person is unable to tolerate and digest a protein called “Gluten” which is frequently found in food products that have Wheat, Rye or Barley as their ingredients. However some other products have gluten in them which will have devastating effects on the system of a child having this disease.

This is a genetic disease/disorder which is transferred from Mother or father to the child, but unfortunately this disease can go undiagnosed for years. The symptoms usually start to appear after the baby is exposed to gluten. But this too can take time and easily weeks or months can pass before the symptoms appear. The Mother or the care giver should keep notice of symptoms like frequent stomachaches or vomiting, irregular bowel movements, inability to gain weight etc. Celiac Disease is indeed very common as an estimated 3 million Americans suffer from it which is a number greater than those suffer from Alzheimer’s

A Blood test is required to know if the baby has this disease but false negatives can occur and proper care should be taken while interpreting the results of the test. Once tested positive, unfortunately there is no cure for this disease and a gluten free diet is the only remedy. There are specialist diets available in the market which offer wide range of products specially made for celiac disease babies. The symptoms usually disappear with Gluten free diet and constant medical supervision is not necessary but what is necessary is a change in lifestyle and eating patters so as to avoid any complications as severe hindrance in absorption of nutrients can cause anemia and other health issues.
