Big Kid Underwear Potty Training - Using Underwear As a Potty Training Reward

Posted: Nov 11, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

A traditional treat for success, underwear and potty training are the hallmarks of becoming a big kid. The thrill of big girl panties or underwear just the big boys wear is an enticing factor in broaching the subject of toilet training with a child. Mentioning that they'll get to wear brand-new underwear in potty training is often just the right way to spark a child's interest in the idea of leaving diapers behind. While training pants are recommended to start as accidents will happen, that first pair of underwear can be a great reward for your child's accomplishments.

Making a big day of the child's first successful bowel movement is a great way to encourage continuing to master using the toilet. A special lunch and trip to the store to pick out their first package of underwear for potty training can be a great way to embark on this adventure. By learning to use the potty, your child is gaining independence, and letting them pick out the colors of their first underwear is a great way to recognize the ways your child is growing. The toilet training process is filled with celebrations for successful attempts, but don't let the mishaps get the better of you.

The underwear in potty training is subject to accidents from time to time. When a mistake happens, talk about what your child could differently to prevent this type of problem in the future rather than scolding them for failing. If they waited too long and made a mess of their favorite underwear, they'll remember to go use the potty when they need to next time if it's explained to them clearly. Your child needs reassurance and encouragement even when they struggle with learning to use the toilet. The incentive of big-kid underwear is potty training at it's best, so be sure to make a big fuss over the new underpants your child can wear now that they're learning to use the toilet.
