Bottle Feeding 101

Posted: May 07, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Some parents choose to give their baby a bottle of formula instead of breast milk.  Other parents give their baby a bottle of breast milk once breastfeeding has been firmly established.  NO matter what the bottle contains, there are several tips that parents should follow in order to safely and successfully bottle feed their baby.

First, make sure that the baby is wearing a bib to protect in the event any spills or spit ups.  This will make it easier to clean up after feeding the baby.  Next, you should cradle the baby in one arm, but be sure not to place the baby in a full reclining position.  Feeding the baby while he or she is entirely horizontal can cause ear infections.  Your supporting arm can lean against a nursing pillow or the arm of a chair while you feed the baby.

Once you have placed the baby and yourself in the proper positions, you are ready to give the bottle to the infant.  Gently ease the bottle into the baby's mouth and allow him or her to feed.  Interact with the baby during this time by talking or singing to him or to her.

When the baby is finished, remove the bottle and set it aside.  Now it is time to burp the baby.  You will sometimes need to burp the baby in the middle of a feeding, especially younger babies and newborns.  To burp the baby, make sure that you are supporting the head, and then rub the baby's back in a circular motion.  Some parents prefer to gently pat their baby on the back in order to burp them.  With practice, you will find a method that works both for you and for your baby.

After bottle feeding, make sure that you discard any remaining milk or formula and then clean the bottle properly.  You can place glass bottles in the dishwasher for extra sanitation.  Following these tips will help you successfully bottle feed your baby.
