Breastfeeding Tips Every New Mom Needs

A new mom has many overwhelming changes to deal with. From changes in her body to the heightened emotions of having a brand new baby, there is much to confront in her new role.  For most new mothers, dealing with a lot of it comes pretty naturally, but there are some skills required that a little research could help along. Since it is commonly agreed that mothers milk is the healthiest feeding option for babies, most mothers choose to breastfeed. Therefore, it is wise to consider getting the help of an expert to learn the best ways to go about it.

Breastfeeding is quite natural, but it is also something that takes quite a lot of practice to get right. From different latching techniques to varying holds, it is best to know the different methods and variations in order to find the best one for you and your baby.  Keeping both mother and baby comfortable is the best way to find success in feedings.

It is only logical that without a good latch, the baby will not get any of mothers milk.  Learning the different ways baby will latch on to the nipple is a great way to ensure success in feedings.  In order to get the baby to latch, it is important to follow a basic and simple technique.  First, you should tilt baby's head back with his or her head supported by a pillow.  Then, you are ready to put the nipple in her mouth.  Help guide her mouth around the nipple.  The baby will naturally begin to feed once the nipple is in her mouth.

Once you have figured out latching, it is time to consider the best ways to hold the baby while she feeds.  The most common choice is the cradle hold.  In this position, the baby's head is in the crook of your arm, and you are belly to belly with her.  For mothers who might have had a Cesarean section, the football hold can be more comfortable.  The baby is placed on a pillow and tucked close by your side.  While supporting her head with your hand, bring the baby's mouth up to your breast.  For mothers who need to rest while feeding baby, the side-lying position is best.  It is no secret that new moms can be pretty tired, so it is good to know of a safe way to feed baby that lets mom get some much-needed rest.
