Changing Diapers 101

Posted: May 07, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

For many new parents, one of the first things that they will have to learn is how to change a baby's diaper.  This can be simple for some parents and more challenging for others.  Following a few tips and tricks can make changing diapers into a much easier experience.

First, it is important to be prepared.  Make sure that you have all of the supplies that you need in front of you before you begin changing the baby's diaper.   This means keeping diapers, baby wipes, diaper creams or ointments, baby powder (if necessary), and a change of clothes within arm's reach.  Before you begin, you also need to place the baby on a smooth, sturdy surface like a changing table or dresser equipped with a changing pad.  Never leave the baby alone in the process of changing a diaper.

Once you are ready to start, place a clean diaper underneath the baby's bottom before you remove the old diaper.  This prevents accidents in the event that the baby cannot wait to relieve himself or herself before the new diaper is in place.  Next, remove the soiled diaper and toss it in the trash.  You should wipe the baby's bottom from front to back until it is clean.  You can interact with your baby during this process by singing a song or talking to him or to her.

Before placing a new diaper on the baby, you might want to use a diaper cream, powder, or ointment in order to prevent or to treat diaper rash.  There are many good versions available, ranging from heavy creams to all-natural lotions and sprays.  Good ways to prevent diaper rash include changing the baby's diaper often and allowing the bottom to air out without wearing a diaper from time to time.

Now you are ready to fasten the clean diaper onto the baby.  Make sure that it is tight enough so that it will not leak.  Change the baby's clothes if needed and then wash your hands thoroughly.  Rejoice in a successful diaper changing, one of many yet to come!
