Child Proofing Electrical Cords

You don’t have to have your home child proof before you bring the new born home from the hospital. It is when the baby begins to move around and crawl that you need to be prepared for anything that can be grabbed, pulled down or fell down like staircase to be made safe. Remember babies learn new skills fast so better to prepare sooner rather than later.

Begin child proofing our home by taking a walk through your house and look at everything through your baby’s eyes. It can be a good idea to get down on the floor at their level and see what dangers you can find. Be aware of open gates or doors that should be guarded, stairways, any heavy objects that can be reached and pulled down on top of the baby, sharp edges of furniture and cabinets that contain hazardous chemicals.

Also be aware of any wires or curtain ropes and cords that are hanging low enough for a baby to reach, chocking by blind cords and wires is a huge cause of infant fatalities.

Child proofing electrical cords is a really good idea to make your child safe in the home. Make sure any wiring that is along the floors is safely attached to the wall with U nails or tacks so it cannot come loose. Any wiring that is attached to electrical appliances like lamps and DVD players that are low down and in reach of a baby must be moved to higher ground where the child cannot reach. Also be aware of any electrical appliances that can be reached from the kitchen counter like kettles of boiling water or electrical cords on the toaster. It is common to place a child on the counter in their child seat if preparing lunch and so on but the child can be easily electrocuted or burned if the wiring is loose or extra long cords are in reach of the baby. Use Zip ties and cord winders where possible and don’t leave large loops of cord accessible to baby. Electrical shocks and strangulation are common risks make sure you have all corners covered in your home to prevent any of the risks mentioned above.
