Color-Changing Suit Tells Parents When Baby Is Under The Weather

Posted: Apr 08, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

When babies are fussy, it would help to be a mind reader. When they cry, they might be tired, hungry, need a diaper changed, or at worst, getting sick. Unfortunately, they can't explain to us that their ear or throat hurts, or that they feel hot, but a very high fever can spike quickly and a temperature can be very dangerous to a baby. Their bodies heat up much more quickly than an adult's. Of course, this new Babyglow baby suit could save parents the aggravation and maybe a trip to the emergency room, too.

The Babyglow suit uses pigments within the fabric that changes the color of the suit to alert a parent that the baby's temperature has changed. Invented by an individual inventor in the UK, Chris Ebejer, the Babyglow uses ink-pigment with heat-sensitive molecules. He's worked for over six years with scientists to embed these pigments into a cotton fabric.

Similar to typical footed onesies, the Babyglow suit is available in pink, blue and light green. When a baby's temperature goes above the 98.6 mark, the suit changes from whatever color it is to white. This alerts parents that a temperature change has taken place. The inventor, and mothers weighing in on the blogs, claim that it's a great idea because it's very difficult to take a baby's temperature, so this Babyglow suit allows them to easily sense a temperature change.

"Mothers are going to find these invaluable," said Ebejer. "Heat is invisible. The suit changes that and makes it visible. It communicates to the mother where a baby can't." Ebejer has worked for many years, and he has said that he spent over $1 million to get this product to market. "It has taken over my life, but I'm very passionate about it. I believe that this is a product that will save lives."

The Babyglow baby suit is available right now in the UK, but the inventor and the manufacturer have been working to get a deal done with several major US stores so that it can be sold over here. It will retail for about $33. Visit www.gizmag.com for more information.
