Dos and Don'ts When Hiring a Babysitter

Posted: May 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

The babysitting experience has its own set of unwritten rules. If you don't want the whole thing to turn into a traumatic experience, there are a few important considerations.

Do's

-Do a background check on the babysitter you are intending to hire. You are putting your children in the hands of this person, therefore you have to be certain that you are not taking a chance on a bad element. Check references to be sure.

-Do interview the babysitter personally. What may look glowing on paper is not always congruent to the sitter herself. She may be sullen and withdrawn, or simply not have the right attitude or demeanor to effectively communicate with your kids. Meeting her face to face before hiring her will help you to be the judge of that.

-Do provide her with emergency contact numbers before the visit. Make sure she can easily reach you in case there is an urgent matter.

-Do take her on a house tour before the visit. She will need to know where certain things are, such as the bathroom, medicine cupboard, and refrigerator.

Don'ts

-Don't hire a babysitter who is only a little younger than your children. Some babysitters in middle or high school can actually be pretty good, but younger than that, and you are being unreasonable. A babysitter should be mature enough or your children will not be able to see them as authority figures.

-Don't leave the house in disarray before a babysitter visits. You are not hiring her as a housekeeper, and letting her tidy up will take her attention away from your children. Also, she will have a hard time looking for things she needs.

-Don't disrespect or patronize your sitter. Treating a babysitter as a respectable employee is the key, no matter how young they are. You would want to make them feel comfortable, so you can hire them the next time you need them.

These are only a few guidelines, but you are apt to pick up a lot of useful tips as you go along. As long as you take the necessary preparations, things are bound to go smoothly.
