Getting A Delayed Birth Certificate in Canada

It goes without saying that having a healthy baby is surely one of the most happy moments in one’s life.. However, if the baby is sick or born prematurely, joy is mixed with fear as doctors question the survival of the little one.  My sister- in-law had to have her baby in her seventh month of pregnancy because of premature contractions. The baby was put in an incubator in a Toronto hospital; she was put in intensive care.

In this case the story had a happy ending - little Dominic is a chubby cheerful baby and his mother has recovered enough to want to travel to her native country of Bulgaria in Europe to visit her parents for Christmas. Unfortunately, she was very sick at the time baby was born and was not able to register its birth and get a birth certificate now and she found out it was very difficult to get a passport for him to travel to Europe.

In fact, without a birth certificate, a child cannot register to attend school or qualify for government healthcare. Birth certificate is one of the most important documents a person in Canada needs. What my sister in law needed to do was get a Delayed Registration of Birth for Dominic. The process took  about 4 months.  She applied  to the Office of the Registrar General in Ontario. The process was the same as a regular registration of birth, there were two additional forms to fill out and she needed to provide her certificate of birth.

  1. I did some internet search and I would advise anybody who needs their delayed birth certificate expedited to use the services of professionals: http://www.canadianbirthcertificate.com/delayed-registration-birth.html

I am looking now at Christmas pictures of baby Dominic, his parents and grandparents in their New Hampshire home. Now that Dominic has a birth certificate, they are looking forward to organizing his christening.

The first time I heard about e-passports last year I thought “What the hell, is this another Big Bother scenario”. I recently attended a citizenship ceremony in Vancouver with a Pakistani couple who are friends of mine and were about to become Canadian citizens. I can honestly say this was one of the most solemn and moving ceremonies I have lately attended – with the official speeches, oath and anthem singing. The only bad thing was that their 20-year old son Fahim was not able to attend to ceremony because he failed the citizenship test.
