Good News For New Mothers - You Can Shift Baby Fat and Lose Weight While You Sleep

Posted: Aug 28, 2009 |

Pity new mothers. As if they do not have enough to cope with looking after their new offspring, the race to lose weight after giving birth has almost turned into a competitive sport. Celebrities who spring back into shape on the way home from hospital make it look easy. Now a new study shows that sleep deprivation may hinder the weight loss process for mothers. So it is really true that you need more zzzz's to shift those extra pounds of baby fat?

It has been documented that postpartum women getting more than seven hours sleep a night lose weight more easily than those with a sleep deficit. Studies on sleep and weight loss are not new. The theory is that sleep is linked to hormonal activity which in turn affects appetite. It has not been proven, but it is generally agreed that for anyone seeking to lose weight, a few extra hours sleep may be beneficial.

Unfortunately, women with young children are one of the groups who probably find it most difficult to claim that extra sleep time. Other factors, such as an unsettled newborn baby, other children to look after, and all of the other usual household chores or work to complete etc, make it more likely for sleep patterns to be irregular and interrupted. So while an excuse for sleeping longer may be welcomed, often the opportunity simply does not arise.

It is always good advice for new mothers to get as much rest as possible, so that their own health does not suffer. Unfortunately though, they may not be able to avail of the sleep weight loss plan as often as they may wish for!
