Guidelines to Employing a Babysitter

Posted: May 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

You might have always been there for your children, but there will always come a day when you have to leave them alone for a night or two. The time has come for you to look for a babysitter. Hiring a babysitter isn't difficult. Here are a few guidelines to make it even easier for you.

Finding a Babysitter

You can find a babysitter by asking people you know for referrals. They may have hired a very good babysitter in the past who will be willing to babysit for you, too. Or you may have a teenage niece who would love to make a few extra bucks. The good thing about recommendations is that they will also be able to tell you what a babysitter is like, and you will most likely get a good one rather than an untried sitter.

Interviewing Babysitters

Hiring a responsible babysitter is for a large part, in your hands. When you meet your applicants face to face, you can already start evaluating if you will able to trust these people, and how much they know about babysitting. You can ask important questions to evaluate their knowledge. Prepare a list of these questions beforehand.

Briefing the Babysitter

When you've found a babysitter you like, you have to brief them beforehand. Included in the briefing are the rules of the house, a short tour, a description of what your children are like and how to deal with them, how to deal with emergencies, how to reach you just in case, and other such important considerations.

Preparing for the Babysitter

Make sure your house is spic-and-span and that everything is in its proper place before the babysitter arrives. Talk to your children and make sure that they agree to behave properly with the sitter.

After the Visit

Make sure you arrive at the time you agreed upon. Do not forget to abide by the terms of payment. Ask the babysitter for a comprehensive report of what went on during the visit. Take note of the babysitter's contact details in case you want to reach her on another occasion.

Think of the whole babysitting experience as a growing-up process for your children and for you as a parent. Occasional separation from your children is important and can even be refreshing every once in a while.
