How To Start Your Child On Solid Foods - Tips For Parents

Posted: Sep 02, 2010 | Views: 124 |

Sometimes parents and carers may not know when they should move their child to solid foods and how to go about it. This article offers parents and carers some advice about starting a child on solid foods.

When should I start the child on solid foods?

If the child shows signs of slower weight gain and an increased appetite then you can begin slowly introducing the child to solids. The change won't be overnight but a gradual process, allow them time to get familiar with the taste first. Some children enjoy the switch and take to the new textures and tastes immediately, others are not so keen. If the child ejects the food from their mouth it does not necessarily mean they do not like it. Because the food has a different consistency to what they are used to, they may be unsure as to what they should do with it and so they spit it out.

It is a good idea not to feed them too many new foods at one time. Spread them out over a period of time, giving them a chance to express their feelings to you regarding each type of food. This will help you make a note of what food they like and those that they dislike. Also you will learn if the child has any allergies to any particular food types.

Food that is soft in texture, such as baby cereal or baby rice, is a good place to start, along with mashed up banana, pureed vegetable and fruits. I hope you have found this article useful and you have a successful time introducing your child to solid food.
