What's in a name? This is the first important decision you must make for your child, choosing the proper name that will depict your son or daughter as they grow up. But how are you to decide on a name before you even get to know the person you are to attach it to? Calling upon your heritage or family tradition is probably one of the best ways to choose your baby's name and names from India have such rich meaning that Indian parents can be overwhelmed with their choices.

If your newborn is a male you have selections like: Darpak, which means Kamdev - god of love; Dhanesh, lord of wealth; Duranjaya, a heroic son; Lalitchandra, beautiful moon; Lokesh, king of world; Uday, to rise; Ujesh, one who give light; and Unmesh, which means flash, blowing, opening. These are just a small sampling of the boys names you as a parent have to choose from.

Your daughter may spark names such as Bhairavi, which means a melody in classical music; Bala, a young girl; Bina, a musical instrument; Kalpana, idea or imagination; Kana, forest; Kaumudi, moonlight; Sahana, patience; Sachita, consciousness; Savarna, daughter of the ocean; and Shubha, meaning auspicious. Whatever name you choose for your daughter, Indian names offer diverse meaning and significance.

Remember, you are not predisposing your child to emulate the meaning of their name, you are choosing a name that may carry on traditions of the family or one that just plain ole sounds nice. Naming your child can be an enjoyable experience. Discovering the meanings behind a name can help in making that decision or you may decide to choose a name of family significance. Whatever the case may be, enjoy the process, do some research and best of all, pick a name that you would like to say time and time again.
