Are Digital Baby Monitors Safe For Children?

Today, almost everything has gone digital. Cellular phones, computers and even simple household appliances, such as telephones and microwaves, have all switched to digital technology.   However, the growing concern of many is whether these hi-tech gadgets can be considered safe for our health, especially in gadgets such as baby monitors that are usually placed in such a close proximity to children.

A lot of parents nowadays fear that if they use a digital monitor to help them keep watch over  their child, they might be exposing their offspring to too much  electromagnetic radiation, with the worry being  that this may cause significant damage to the child's nervous system.

Children, after all, are much more prone to damage as their systems are still developing at such a young age. So we ask the question that many of these parents want to know, is it really safe to use digital baby monitors for children?

What Is Electro-SMOG And How Does It Threaten Our Health?

Electro-SMOG is the electromagnetic energy that is emitted by common gadgets in our home such as our televisions, cordless phones, microwaves and digital baby monitors. Studies have been made over the years claiming that too much exposure to electro-SMOG can result in health problems, which may affect the nervous system of the body.

Being aware of the initial symptoms- headaches, disruptive sleep patterns, chronic fatigue and in extreme circumstances even abnormal behavioural patterns in children. I understand these concerns, but, you just have to step inside one of our hospitals to realize that most of the equipment being used to monitor, or record and print readings are digital.

That is aside from the usual computers and high tech. hospital equipment, and babies are as likely to be monitored and in the vicinity of far more digital electromagnetic energy in such circumstances, than they would at home.  So, in my view, they are safe to use in the children's bedroom/nursery.

How Are Baby Monitors Different from Other Gadgets with Electro-smog?

Manufacturing companies, have to demonstrate that the baby monitor's they manufacture do comply with stringent safety factors.

Phillips is one of these manufacturing companies that claim that the level of electro-smog released by their gadgets are 10,000 times lower from the safety norms that are accepted internationally. The company also adds a recommendation that for parents to have total peace of mind, they can position the monitoring device at least a meter away from the child

The  digital age has brought significant  benefits, with minimal risks involved.

Some people hold the view that digital baby monitors have proven in recent years to be better in reception compared to that of the older analog version.

But,  really it is a matter of personal choice, because the features of a product may totally fulfil the expectations for one individual, yet totally miss the mark for somebody else.  Knowing what specific elements you want is a good starting point.

So to summarise: digital baby monitors are very useful as a means to keeping a watch over your child/children,and using common sense when positioning the monitor, you are advised   to follow manufacturer's guidelines/recommendations.

Thus, the monitor should be no closer than one metre to the child.

In Victorian times, around two weeks after the birth, the young mother would send out her 'at home' visiting card, and attached to this would be a small card, with the name of the baby in the centre, and date of the birth in the lower left hand corner.
