Knowing When to Potty Train Your Child

By time you start thinking about when to potty train, it may be time to get started. Be prepared to start this exciting and challenging time in your child's development by reading ahead of time about what to expect. Research shows that when to potty train is often best left to the child. When they start to ask questions about the feelings and sensations of their body, it may be a good time to bring up the subject of using the big-kid potty. Other children exhibit certain behaviors when they're about to need a diaper change, this too can be a great opportunity to use nature's help in finding when to potty train.

By becoming aware of the signals that your child is about to make a bowel movement, you can teach your child how to recognize the feelings and begin to use to the toilet. Learning about their bodies and the way in which they work can also be a time of questions. Answering your child honestly with factual information can be an important way to foster the growth of a health individual. Being realistic in your expectations can ensure a positive outcome as well. Greeting an accident as a time to offer advice on ways to improve rather than scolding your child for their mistake will ease the learning process.

An important stage in child development, deciding when to potty train your little one is a tough call. There's a vast sea of opinions on the subject, but the proven psychological techniques of positive reinforcement are known to be a factor in successfully mastering the toilet. Praising the efforts and celebrating successful bowel movements with joyous displays will remind the child of what they should do when their body gives them that feeling. Knowing the ways in which your child learns best can be an asset in easing the process. The reward of big-kid underwear is a great treat, but praise and encouragement are a sure-thing.
