Long Range Baby Monitor Interference and How to Avoid It

Posted: Jun 13, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Let's face it, there are few things more important to people than the safety of there children in there homes. This is why it is a must to have a baby monitor. A baby monitoring system gives parents the peace of mind to be able to put your baby down for a nap, or to sleep for the night, and knowing that they will be safe. And if anything does happen to go wrong, the parents will know about it almost immediately and be able to quickly react to correct the situation. In most instances a normal range baby monitor will do, but for those who live in large homes (or those families that live on a more expansive plot of land), then a long range baby monitor would be a more ideal solution.

Long range baby monitors serve a very good purpose, but they are not without their drawbacks. Long range baby monitoring systems can sometimes be bogged down with interference. This interference mainly comes from having to compete on the same frequencies as other wireless electronics in and around the home. Some of these electronic devices include cordless phones and computer Wi-Fi connections. Manufactures tend to use common frequency ranges to operate their wireless products, and so interfere can be quite common.

Another source of interference comes from our neighbors, who are generally using the same amount of wireless devices that you are. With the influx on the amount and usage of wireless products, it's no wonder that long range baby monitor interference is almost always has to be accounted for. There have been a number of stories were people have turned on there monitors only to see a different baby on their screen (and this can be quite frightening). Being able to see the neighbor's baby (and vice versa) can be quite unnerving. There are also stories of being able to hear the neighbor's conversations through the monitor. And again, if you can see and hear them, then the odds are that they'll be able to see and hear you the same way. What an invasion of privacy that is.

All is not lost in the battle of long range baby monitor interference. There are some steps that you can take to alleviate all together or at least lessen the effects of interference. The first thing to check out is the models transmission range. More expensive models utilize more powerful transmission strengths. Transmission strength is extremely important to look for, especially when dealing with a long range monitor. The other step that you can take to eliminate interference is to change the frequency on the baby monitor. If you start to notice that you have major interference at 900 MHz than switch to 2.4 MHz, or any other frequency that is not loaded with other equipment, therefore a model with multiple channels should be used to avoid any problems with frequency in the future.

There are many models out there that suit every budget, so sure and pick a baby monitor out with all the features that you need. But at the very least, if long range baby monitor interference is a concern, parents should choose baby monitoring devices that have a more powerful broadcasting frequency, and one that allows the frequency to be easily adjusted.
