Model Railways - Toys or Collectibles?

Posted: May 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Everybody loves model train sets as a child. It was amazing to observe that model train going round the track. This has not changed. Model Railways are still popular toys, but they also make the basis for a great collection. Collectors go mad for rare or interesting model railway stuff. What makes one model train a toy, and another a collectors dream? Let's discuss a few points to help you clarify. I'll also compare some model train sets intended for children versus those made as art.

Model Railways and train sets have pretty much been around since the beginning of the railroad system. They've always been popular and the demand just keeps on rising. The designs are obviously more realistic, and children love them. When buying for children, you want to be sure it is affordable, but robust enough to take a little punishment. There are several brands such as Hornby based in the UK, and Bachmann, Pacific Rails, and Lionel in the US. These companies' products range in price depending on what you want, but are still fairly reasonable.

Model railway collectors are a very dedicated bunch. There are even collectors and hobby groups. There are many distinctive types of collection. These range from small scale model train sets to huge model railway layouts. Large amounts are often spent on building up large collections. It's not everyone's idea of money well spent, but if it's your passion then why not? Craftsmanship and attention to detail are the things that a collector is seeking. Uniqueness is a much sought after quality. The artistry of the piece plays more of a role than the price.

Some railway models can be a toy and a collectible. For example the Lionel model railways and trains. Lionel was established in 1900, well over 100 years ago. The older sets are worth a lot to some collectors. Lionel is still making great model train sets that are enjoyed by children and hobbyists alike. They are well made so they are a great toy now, but they will grow to be more and more collectible.

Whether you are a child playing, someone with a great hobby or a collector, the appeal is very much the same. Model railways are a toy with collectible appeal. When buying a set, you want to know if you are buying it for play or for a collection. This will ensure you get the correct piece. You do not want to buy a thousand dollar piece for a child to play with, and you do not want to get a collector a cheap toy set.
