Mommy's Little Beach Baby: Sun Protection For Your Little One

Posted: Jul 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

It's summer time! And what better way to spend your summer with your little water baby than lounging around the local pool or at the beach. But, just like grown-ups need to watch their sun exposure, so did kids and babies, especially since they have very sensitive skin. So, what's the best way to protect your little one from overexposure to the sun and still be able to have fun out doors? Well, here are some tips and tricks to get your beach baby up, out, and ready to go!

1. Choose a great baby/kid sunscreen. You may be wondering what's the difference between kid sunscreen and baby sunscreen? Well there really isn't a difference, even when you compare them to adult sunscreens. Often baby sunscreens are made to be gentler on baby's sensitive skin and won't burn if some gets in their eyes. But, as long as you are choosing an SPF that is 50+, your baby's skin should be well protected. You should also reapply it every few hours.

2. Make sure your baby wears a hat. There are a variety of sun hats available for babies, and you should choose one that shades your baby's face from the suns harmful rays. You should also choose one that is light weight and still holds it shapes fairly well, even when wet.

3. Invest in UV protective clothing. There are a variety of children and babies clothing out there that offer UVA/UVB protection for your little one. These clothes come in the form of bathing suits, rash guards, cover-ups, and hats. These clothes are usually light weight, so don't worry about your baby getting over heated, and most are designed to wick away sweat to keep your child cooler. They are usually fast drying, and are a great way to provide your baby with extra protection on top of sunscreen.

4. Don't forget their eyes! Even if you can't get your baby to leave those adorable baby sunglasses on, you shouldn't fret! There are a variety of new designs out there, specifically geared toward babies that help them stay on and stay in place. They are comfortable, and are a lot different than just any other baby sunglasses. It's important to give your baby's eyes consideration when you are investigating sun protection for your little one.

These tips are all very important when getting your baby or child ready to spend an afternoon by the pool, or even when you are considering spending a great deal of time at your local park or in your own backyard. You should not only be concerned about protecting your child from a sunburn, but also other types of skin damage that is caused by the sun that can have life long consequences. Sun protection is not something you should take lightly and should be given even more consideration than just picking out your child's bathing suit!

Infants have particularly delicate skin and require extra care to keep them safe from the sun's damaging rays. The rationale for this is that infants are much more prone to sunburn because their skin is still very fragile. Children born now have 1 in 7 odds of getting skin cancer. Since skin cancer can be prevented, it is vital to safeguard your child's fragile skin by using clothing that provides sun protection and also using a topical sunblock product.

Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful radiation is important throughout the year, but especially during the summer months when you probably spend quite a bit of time outside. Many people think that wearing a tee-shirt with a swimsuit will provide adequate sun protection, but that tee-shirt has a rating of only 5 on the UPF, or ultraviolet protection factor, scale.
